PRESENTATION

In 1957, the first pandemic virus of the Asian flu identified in Brazil was that of a sample identified in Uruguaiana, on August 15, 1957, and processed here in our state by the team of Dr. Newton Neves da Silva, of the then Instituto de Pesquisas Biológicas (IPB) (Institute of Biological Research). The article republished in this issue of the Health Journal shows the creativity and the quality of the research performed in our state at that time. It is a study that associates home inquiry and serological inquiry. The serological inquiry was based on samples collected for the purposes of pre-marital examination of testing for syphilis, the same methodology used in studies performed in New York, at that time, for the characterization of the Pandemic (Widelock, D. et al., 1958, 1959, 1960).
